CHEROKEE DELEGATION ENDORSES ARIZONA LAW

The Cherokee County Legislative Delegation has created a Resolution declaring unanimous support for the recent Arizona legislation concerning identification checks on residency status.

“After realizing that the Attorney General of the United States along with our President had been commenting on a bill that they had not even read, we decided to declare our support for a piece of very clear legislation that supports the federal immigration laws,” said Representative Calvin Hill, delegation secretary, “Anybody that actually reads the Arizona bill can see that it does not allow for any sort of racial or ethnic profiling, in fact it expressly prohibits such actions.”

While many people hold strong opinions – one way or another – about this legislation, we have found out that very, very few have actually read the law! This included the United States’ Attorney General, supposedly our top legal officer and professional. The delegation asks that, before you form an opinion on this, or any other issue, please read the actual law. You can find the actual Arizona law at http://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/council/SB1070-HB2162.PDF on the internet.

Below is the actual copy of the Resolution from the Cherokee Delegation:

A RESOLUTION

Supporting Arizona’s new immigration law known as SB 1070, commending Governor Jan Brewer for signing the bill into law, and urging Georgia’s delegation to the United States Congress to support Arizona’s fight against illegal immigration; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, on April 23, 2010, Arizona’s Governor, Jan Brewer, signed into law SB 1070, a bill which provides for state enforcement of federal immigration law; and
WHEREAS, SB 1070 was sponsored by Senator Russell and is aimed at identifying, prosecuting, and deporting illegal immigrants; and
WHEREAS, the nation’s safety and security, as well as those very principles upon which this country was founded, are threatened by dangerous, costly, and abusive actions resulting from massive illegal entries into the United States; and
WHEREAS, in response to these threats, SB 1070 provides a tool for the State of Arizona to use as the state attempts to solve a crisis the people of Arizona did not create and that the federal government has refused to fix; and
WHEREAS, Arizona, its General Assembly, and its Governor are brave leaders in the fight against illegal immigration, and Arizona is the first state to demand that immigrants meet federal legal requirements, including the federal requirement to carry identification documents legitimizing an immigrant’s presence on American soil; and
WHEREAS, Arizona’s new immigration law provides an indispensable tool for the police in a border state that is a leading magnet for illegal immigration; and
WHEREAS, the majority of the citizens of the State of Georgia applaud Arizona’s efforts to protect our country against the illegal immigration crisis and are ready to stand united in this effort.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the following members of the Georgia General Assembly express their support for Arizona’s new immigration law known as SB 1070, commend Governor Jan Brewer for signing the bill into law, and urge Georgia’s delegation to the United States Congress to support Arizona’s fight against illegal immigration for the good of this state and of the United States.

So Resolved this ____ day of _________, 2010.

Georgia House of Representatives Speaker David Ralston has selected the new Cherokee County Airport Terminal as one of the stops on a planned state fly-around on Wednesday, July 7. Speaker Ralston will arrive at the airport at 4 p.m. for a Press Conference and a meeting with State Representatives, elected County and City officials and Community leaders from Cherokee as well as Pickens, Bartow and Forsyth counties. He will be briefing them on the past year’s activities of the House as well as outlining the plans and challenges of the upcoming session. The news media is invited to be a dynamic part of this meeting.

The briefings will be followed at 5 p.m. by a reception and fundraising event, also at the airport. The reception will be open to all that would like to attend and get to know the Speaker personally. Those interested contributing at the reception should make their check to “Georgia Republican Party”, with the memo line ‘for legislative majority’. The reception, sponsored by the Cherokee County Republican Party is designed to raise funds specifically dedicated to holding onto and increasing its majority in the House in the upcoming elections.

The Cherokee County Airport is located just off the Airport Road, I575 exit 24, just a few miles north of the City of Canton. The newly completed terminal is on the west side of the airport runways.
